This week is kick started with another round of parties (as if last weeks over indulgence wasn't enough) There is little or no time to work off the excesses between appetizers and drinks. I am not by nature a gluttonous gal and it's not that I have trouble saying no I just feel this is the time of year to make merry and support the efforts of the Party Host and Hostess. Whenever I entertain be it small or large my biggest fear is "what if no one comes". So when I receive an invitation I think of the trouble it takes to prepare a soiree or lunch and truly believe I should support the brave soul who is hosting, even if it is the 5th Mince Pie and Sherry evening of the week!
I laughed out loud at Drew Barrymore in Music and Lyrics when she turned up at the hip and funky promo party carrying a box of cookies and said " my mother always told me never go to a party empty handed" I always offer to provide desserts or goodies when I can for a party and feel it helps take the pressure off the hostess. On the other hand I am not so good at receiving the same kind offers. Mainly because I have usually planned and prepared in advance the delicacies for the evening. Cracker on the other hand is not too proud to accept any humble offerings of alcoholic beverages. Not because he is a closet drinker but mainly to keep the wine rack stacked and to have a selection on hand when I decide to add a splash of vino to some culinary delight which requires only plonk and not a private reserve. I can't tell the difference between Merlot and Milo!
Last Friday we had a little social gathering here and I went all out to plate up mountains of seasonal goodies and got carried away with my decor theme. (Red and Gold everything) I had some dazzling, bright, plastic, red gems that I placed strategically and liberally amongst the sugar dusted pies/brownies/cookies. Did I get one or 20 comments on what jelly I had used to make them? Never mind the labour intensive pastries I had prepared, the fascination was for the tacky baubles. So next time maybe I should just accept Drew's offer of boxed cookies and forget about trying to be a Domestic Goddess!

I often think we must cook for the pleasure of it, and not the feedback! (Because that is not always forthcoming, sadly.) Funny about those red gems! Having said that, I'm always really appreciative when someone makes a big effort.
I keep making mulled wine and Sigmund keeps asking me "where did you get that wine?" He lives in fear that I will dump a bottle of good red into my stew pot.
For me cooking is sometimes a chore you know what shall I make the kids for dinner every night but baking is more a pleasure.
I have been known to call Cracker at the office and say is Cote Du Rhone OK for cooking or better for drinking?
